St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC) will present "Buoyant," a nautical-inspired show of self-expression through color, texture, and design for Passageways, at Sophie’s Gallery in El Cajon (109 Rea Avenue, El Cajon, CA 92020).

The show will run from Oct. 4-31, 2019, with a public reception on October 4, from 5- 8 p.m. during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

"Buoyant" includes a whimsical collection of mosaic and hand-painted buoys, playful stuffed fish, and Dulce Moreno’s ceramic mermaids. Buoys range from the traditional stripes of lobster floats to fanciful waterscapes. Playful fabric fish and guppies were fashioned from material to make stuffed animals in sewing workshops. Many buoys are accompanied with artists’ statements about their thoughts and experiences with water and the sea.

Sophie’s Gallery, the off-campus art program of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, features artwork of many talented individuals with developmental disabilities. Inside the gallery is a collection of artworks including jewelry, paintings, fused glass, mosaics, textiles, cards, and etc. The gallery, which is also a gift shop, allows SMSC students to showcase their work, earn a paycheck from sales of their artwork, while also raising funds for the art programs.

Dates and times of events are subject to change without notice. Always check the event organizer's website for the most updated schedule before attending.
