Teachers of the year announced

Three public school instructors have been named teachers of the year' by the San Diego Unified School District. The educators competed against hundreds of applicants. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Every year district officials choose a teacher from an elementary, middle and high school. Those teachers of the year' are honored for their contributions in and outside of the classroom. This year's high school teacher of the year is Tim Towler. He's a biology instructor at the San Diego High School of International Studies. Towler says his students surprised him with the good news.

Towler: "The kids made a big banner, and they had an assembly. And so I got pulled out of class by the counselor and got taken over to an assembly where the kids were letting me know that I got selected to be the teacher of the year."

The other winners are Cindi Elrod of Gage Elementary and Eduardo Ochoa of Marston Middle School. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
