What's causing the middle class to shrink in San Diego? Host Tom Fudge speaks to reporter and producer Joanne Faryon about the next Envision San Diego TV special "The Incredible Shrinking Middle Clas

SD Cost-of-Living Increasing Faster than Wage Growth

Audio posted in the afternoon.

Tom Fudge: Everybody who lives in this beautiful part of Southern California knows and understands the "sunshine tax". It's that added expense of living in a very desirable place. You get what you pay for, and if you want to live in a beautiful landscape with terrific weather year-round, you pay more. That's fair.

But what seems unfair is the growing disparity between the wages we make and the cost of living. Our wages are not just a reflection of the "sunshine tax". That's due to the shortage of the kinds of jobs that pay living wages. San Diego seems to have plenty of college graduates looking for work. But so often, they're applying for jobs that they're clearly overqualified for.

This is the situation that KPBS news examines in a new TV documentary that airs tonight. The documentary is called the Incredible Shrinking Middle Class .

The Envision San Diego TV special The Incredible Shrinking Middle Class will air tonight at 8pm on KPBS-TV. Cable channel 11, broadcast channel 15.
