A record 2,600 transfer students will join 3,950 incoming freshmen when the fall session opens at UC San Diego on Thursday, it was announced today.

The number of transfer students is up by 35 percent over last year, according to the university, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Incoming students in under-represented groups are up 23 percent over last year among the freshmen and transfers.

"We're proud of all the actions we've taken to improve our campus climate," said UCSD Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. "UC San Diego continues to enhance our efforts to recruit well-qualified and diverse students and ensure access to UC San Diego's world-class educational opportunities as we look forward to achieving the extraordinary in the next 50 years."

UCSD was rocked during the last academic year when an off-campus party dubbed the "Compton Cookout" inflamed racial tensions, resulting in numerous demonstrations.

Members of the Black Student Union complained of "structural racism" and said they felt unsafe on campus.

The BSU and UCSD administration eventually agreed on steps to increase minority enrollment.
