As the year comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite KPBS stories in 2014: the 10-year anniversary of the second Battle for Fallujah, a study that hoped to measure whether surfing is an effective cardiovascular exercise, the San Diego Opera's tumultuous year and an exhibit that explored surf board design.

10 Years Later, Camp Pendleton Marines Remember The Battle For Fallujah

In November, Camp Pendleton Marines commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the second Battle for Fallujah, the fiercest combat of the Iraq War and the deadliest urban battle for the Marines since Vietnam. Almost 100 Americans died and 600 others were injured.

KPBS health reporter Kenny Goldberg looked at a Cal State San Marcos study that hoped to measure whether recreational surfing is an effective cardiovascular exercise. The study is scheduled to last into 2017.

San Diego Opera Will Not Close, Announces 2015 Season

After two months of handwringing, upheaval and off-stage drama, the San Diego Opera’s board of directors voted unanimously in May to rescind a vote to close the company.

KPBS arts reporter Beth Accomando gave us a peek into an exhibit at the Mingei International Museum that explores surf board design. The exhibit runs through Jan. 11.
