Getting a professional certificate in beer from a major university might have been an undergraduate joke a few years ago. But with the craft beer business booming in San Diego, educators are starting to take the beer industry seriously.

There are more than 80 craft breweries operating in San Diego County. It's become one of the fastest-growing industries in the region creating thousands of jobs and more hundreds of millions of dollars each year to the regions economy.

Now, San Diego's brewing-gurus are bringing their expertise to the classroom. Both San Diego State University and UC San Diego are offering extension courses offering professional certificates in brewing and the business of beer. And both of those programs are filled to the brim.
