Physical limitations keep many military veterans at home. To help them, Meals-on-Wheels delivers meals across San Diego County.

A caravan of military volunteers delivered meals throughout the county Tuesday in honor of Veterans Day.

Volunteers met in the morning at a meal drop-off location before departing to deliver food.

But Veterans Day is not the only time Meals-on-Wheels delivers to veterans. It has been serving homebound seniors in San Diego for more than 50 years.

Greg Wiest has been a volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels for 12 years. He said it provides more than a meal, it provides a connection. Volunteers are sometimes the only person a senior sees, so the impact of the program goes far beyond wholesome meals.

"Many of the seniors we deliver to are veterans, so it is a special day and you like to shake their hand and thank them," said Wiest.

Anesha Aird is currently serving in the Navy and has volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels for the past four years. She said it gives her a sense of purpose.

"Just because we serve doesn't mean we can't give back to our community and to do something else," she said. "I think that makes me feel better, like I have a sense of accomplishment."

All it takes is two hours a day, twice a month to become a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, said Debbie Case, the CEO of the non-profit.

"Forty-two percent of our clients are veterans or spouses of former veterans," Case said. "So we're helping them out day in and day out throughout the county."

Meals-on-Wheels serves about 2,700 seniors a year.
