Just weeks after he made the transition from recruit to full-fledged Marine, PFC Smedley Butler has been sidelined from his duties as Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego's mascot.

The 7-month-old English Bulldog puppy broke his toe on his left hind paw when he jumped out of a moving vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Smedley's medical mishap was laid out on the MCRD San Diego Facebook page:

"Sadly, our beloved little guy injured himself this weekend...

"Unfortunately, the doc has ordered four to six weeks of light duty and no public appearances. He looks forward to getting better and seeing all of you as soon as possible."
Smedley's duties as mascot include performing at weekly graduation ceremonies, as well as attending recruiting, community relations, and adopt-a-school events.

There are only three official Marine Corps mascots: Smedley Butler (MCRD San Diego), Legend (MCRD Parris Island), and Chesty XIV (Marine Barracks Washington).
