The Navy has announced plans to move the USS Milius and the USS Benfold from their current homeport in San Diego to Japan.

According to U.S. Fleet Forces Command, in the next few years, the Milius and the Benfold will become part of Forward Deployed Naval Forces based at Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

The Benfold will depart San Diego for Yokosuka in the summer of 2015, and the Milius in 2017.

The Navy Times reports:

The change is part of the Navy’s long-range plan to put the most advanced and capable ships forward...

The moves also fulfill a promise made in April by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to place two additional BMD (ballistic missile defense)-capable ships in Japan by 2017.
On Monday, the USS Milius left Naval Base San Diego for a scheduled, independent deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans.
