Sweetwater Union Names New Superintendent

The Sweetwater Union High School District named Karen Janney as its new superintendent Tuesday, pending final Board of Education approval on June 22.

Janney, a former Sweetwater assistant superintendent and principal, will succeed Phil Stover, who has been filling in on an interim basis since replacing a previous interim leader, Sandra Huezo, in March. The school board appointed Janney unanimously in closed session, according to the district.

Janney is an executive coach with the National Center for Urban School Transformation, and a lecturer and executive in the educational leadership program at San Diego State University.

Sweetwater, the second-largest middle and high school district in the state, is searching for stability following a 2012 corruption scandal in the South Bay that engulfed five trustees, a former superintendent and a construction company executive.

In May of last year, the San Diego County Office of Education appointed four interim Board of Education members, who served until late November, when newly elected replacements were seated.
