In an effort to maintain Balboa Park, volunteers on Tuesday planted 47 drought-tolerant trees.
Casey Smith, a district manager for the city of San Diego, said the volunteers are refreshing the park's appearance ahead of the winter's rains.
"People love trees, and they love Balboa Park," Smith said. "They love seeing the different types of trees and the different types of species that we have."
The drought-tolerant trees, which were grown at a Balboa Park nursery, range from the local Torrey Pine to the Guadalupe Cypress.
"The idea is to diversify the kinds of trees and to make sure they're drought-tolerant," Smith said. "We’re also trying a lot of different species like Araucarias and other things that are not native to San Diego County, but they’re native to drought areas and areas that get very similar rain amounts that we have.”
Officials hope to plant 100 trees a year to help keep the park vibrant and green.
