Higher Security At San Diego Airport As Holiday Travel Begins

Higher Security At San Diego Airport As Holiday Travel Begins

The busiest travel week of the year is now underway, with heightened security at San Diego International Airport. Armed police officers and bomb-sniffing dogs will be a visible reminder of recent terrorist attacks across the world.

“It is not in response to any threat to San Diego or the airport,” said Lindbergh Field spokeswoman Rebecca Bloomfield. “As always we ask passengers to be very vigilant when they're traveling through the airport and to report any suspicious behavior to the proper authorities.”

Bloomfield said up to 60,000 travelers will move through the airport each day over the holiday week. It's a 5 percent increase over last year.

AAA forecasts that nationwide nearly 4 million people in the U.S. are expected to fly to their Thanksgiving destinations. Another 43 million will journey 50 miles or more from home.

The rush is expected to start this weekend and continue through Nov. 30. Bloomfield said security lines will likely be long. She advised people to arrive early and be organized.

“Have that bag out and ready to go through the checkpoint and take your shoes off, your belt off and just be ready to get through that line as quickly as possible,” she said.

Bloomfield said federal TSA officials have not implemented additional security check measures.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
