Scripps Health Tuesday entered into a two-year affiliation agreement with the Pioneers Memorial Healthcare District of Brawley, in an effort to improve medical care in the Imperial Valley.

Scripps Health will provide leadership training and development, process improvements, and other related services under the deal. Pioneers Memorial Hospital will continue to operate independently, and maintain its name and governance structure, according to Scripps.

Any financial terms were not disclosed.

Each hospital will have three representatives on a steering committee to manage the affiliation.

"Scripps is pleased to help Pioneers enhance their quality of care while adjusting to the changing health care environment," said Chris Van Gorder, Scripps' president and CEO. "We've worked hard here at Scripps to do that, and we've been successful. We look forward to joining with Pioneers in their efforts to do the same for their community."

Pioneers began seeking a San Diego-area partners in March, and discussions with Scripps Health began the following month. The 107-bed hospital in Brawley includes a trauma center and 16-bed emergency room.
