The San Diego police officer who was wounded in a shooting that killed his partner has been released from the hospital, authorities said Tuesday.

Officer Wade Irwin, 32, was released Saturday and is now at home recovering, police Lt. Scott Wahl said.

"He and his family are thankful for all of the support and well wishes (from the public)," Wahl said.

Irwin and his partner, Officer Jonathan De Guzman, were shot in the Southcrest neighborhood of San Diego July 28 when they attempted a field stop.

De Guzman died after suffering multiple bullet wounds. He was 43.

Jesse Michael Gomez, 52, is the the suspected shooter. Gomez was also wounded during the gun battle.

On Aug. 2, he pleaded not guilty from his hospital bed to charges of murder, attempted murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Gomez also faces a special-circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer, making him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.

The defendant's next court hearing, a status conference, is scheduled for Sept. 1.

Irwin has been a San Diego police officer for nine years and is married and has a young child.
