Not going to December Nights? Here are some other weekend options.

San Diego's Top Weekend Events: Comedy, Chili And Carols
San Diego's Top Weekend Events: Comedy, Chili And Carols GUEST: Nina Garin, editor/producer, KPBS/Arts Calendar

This is trying to. If you're headed to December If you're headed to December 9 today or tomorrow you should remember what Nina Garin said on this show earlier this week. Plan ahead. Know how you will get there and what you want to see and wear something warm. If December Knights is not occupying your weekend plans we have some other ideas for you and joining me is Nina Garin. First of all there is another holiday festival this weekend. There is it is the 6th annual SoNo Fest and Chili Cook-off. That is a festival that celebrates Northpark and South Park . It is smaller and more low-key than December Knights but you still get the same feeling of community. What makes it stand out quick It brings out a lot of popular local bands and you can keep up on what is going on. There is really good vendors. You can get art and jewelry from local crafters and then there is a chili cookoff. How does it work? For $20 you get a handmade ceramic bowl. They are really nice. You get about five tastes of chili and its from different places like Underbelly and Blind Lady Ale House . This is a fund raiser? It is. It is a fundraiser for McKinley Elementary school and it goes toward their music, arts, and Spanish programs. The 6th annual SoNo Fest and Chili Cook-off is Sunday and Northpark. There are a lot of holiday concerts happening this weekend but there is one that you are very excited about. What is Merry-achi Christmas? This is holiday songs done in mariachi style. I love the Nutcracker so what got my attention was this version of their Nutcracker music. [ Music ] What do you tell us about this group? They are called Mariachi Sol De Mexico. They come from a long line of musicians from Mexico. They are very popular and played for you was presidents and they are on movie soundtracks. So even if you are not into holiday songs this is a group on its own so you should just go see them. The Merry-achi Christmas happens Friday night. There is another holiday shall happening at the belly up. It is a John Waters Christmas show. This is meant -- by a director that's known as the King of a bad taste. He has been doing a Christmas show and he does a monologue where he talks about Christmas. Is the night of Christmas bashing? It is actually not. He says that he likes Christmas and sent out an annual Christmas card every year but it is a twisted Christmas card. He talks about the difficult size -- sides of the season. It is like funny but we all appreciate this time of year kind of thing. If there are people out there who are not familiar with the famous John Waters remind us about his films? He was notorious for pink flamingo in the 1970s. My mom said there is one movie you could never see in your life and it is pink flamingo. He's also popular because he wrote and directed hairspray in the 1980s. John Waters Christmas is Sunday at the belly up Tavern. Amy Schumer is in town this weekend. Tell us about her? I would call her queen of comedy. She has a TV show and she wrote and starred in the movie train wreck and I found out she's the first female comic to headline Madison Square Garden. She is known mostly for her strong feminist point of view. And raunchy humor. This been some controversy on this tour. She is a very big critic of Donald Trump and she's not afraid to talk about it. People have left her shows. She's been making headlines about that. Her show is really raunchy so you cannot some -- go was someone who you are embarrassed to sit next to. Amy Schumer is out the Valley View Casino Center that is formally known as a sports arena on Saturday night. There is a concert at the Symphony for people who are interested in getting into classical music. This weekend they are going to be doing the planet, which is a phonic piece. Each piece is named after one of the planets and it is very well known. It is a good way to get into the Symphony because it is already familiar. It pops up in a lot of places we night -- might not expect. You can hear it in Led Zeppelin and Frank Zappa. Let's hear a little bit of the planets. [ Music ] The program called items in the planets is Saturday and Sunday at the Jacobs Music Center. I've been speaking with Nina Garin. Thank you so much. Think you. Have a great weekend.
