The campaign encourages those who want to attend to RSVP to the free public event. But as of Monday morning, the campaign's website says the rally has reached capacity.

Supporters of Sanders plan to rally and march in downtown San Diego beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Concourse next to City Hall.

Michael Johnson, president of the San Diego Progressive Democratic Club, is looking forward to Sanders' visit.

“Bernie has a following. Not just in San Diego, but wherever you find college kids, young kids, the millennials especially,” Johnson said.

Johnson and other supporters want Sanders, a U.S. senator from Vermont, to remain in the race through the June primary, especially because of his support among younger voters.

“Millennials, this is their century and they have to come on board,” Johnson said. “They have to pay attention to politics. Because if this turns to crap, they’ve got to live in it a lot longer than I do.”

The senator so far has a total of 856 pledged delegates while his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton has 1,614 of the 2,383 delegates needed to win the nomination.
