Memorial Day weekend marks the start of the summer movie season.

That usually means an overload of comic book and superhero films. But this year, things are looking a little different.

With many familiar titles returning to the big screen — "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows," "Independence Day: Resurgence," "Ghostbusters," "Jason Bourne" and "Pete's Dragon" to name a few — summer 2016 will be known as the year of nostalgia.

KPBS Midday Edition invited film critics Beth Accomando and Yazdi Pithavala and KPBS/Arts editor Nina Garin to discuss the crop of upcoming summer movies, including what's behind all the '80s and '90s nostalgia.

Each guest was also asked, "If you could only watch one movie this summer, what would it be?"

Accomando chose "The Neon Demon," Pithavala picked "Captain Fantastic," and Garin's choice was "Ghostbusters."

The guests explain their picks on Midday Edition Thursday, plus they confess which movie they know will be bad, but they'll see in theaters anyway.
