Now that the holidays are over and you have fulfilled your obligations. How about doing something for yourself this weekend. There's entertainment to please many around San Diego, hip-hop the late to an enemy -- Japanese Anime classic. Joining us is Nina Garin, editor/producer KPBS Arts Calendar. The hip-hop Valley is the "Nutcracker" and aren't we pass that season? You would think so. The culture shock traditionally stage there "Nutcracker" the first weekend of the new year and this year it does seem late but this isn't the traditional "Nutcracker" What is the hip-hop version like? Instead of ballet there is hip-hop dancing. The music is a blend of hip-hop, pop music, pop culture references in them blends in with the famous Tchaikovsky's score. There are familiar elements there is a party scene and they have a land of suites. They we then the pop-culture stuff from 2016. It's like a year in review. You have to like hip-hop? Not really. It helps. There are pop songs. I think it's more important to go not expecting to see these perfect ballet variations. It's not that at all. There is audience participation. Yes. They get into it and they can sing along. It's a fun way to open 2017. Culture Shock's hip-hop "Nutcracker" is this weekend at Spreckles Theatre. Hip-hop is also part of a month-long series by the San Diego Symphony highlighting American music. Tell us more about that. This is great. It's a series they are doing a month-long celebration of music inspired by America. They want to ask questions like, what is American music or do we have a unifying musical voice here? They are bringing all kinds of performers like the first-ever hip-hop performer presented by the Symphony. Rosanne Cash is doing American roots music and we have the Mexican American band. We have a clip. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] Los Santos Cecelia. What else is coming up? There will be a tribute to West Coast jazz. You will hear Miles Davis, Jeff Baker, the music of Hollywood will be performed. The Symphony is kicking off our American music Festival at the free Festival concert this Saturday. Where and when an what's on this program? That is Saturday night. It's basically highlights from the Festival. You will be hearing pieces by Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. It is free but you have to RSVP on the website. It might be book -- sold out. If you really want to go you should still go out and see if you can get tickets. Make your reservations even though it is free. This is that Jacobs music Center throughout January to. A romantic comedy called "Beau Jest" what's that about? That's comedy about a Jewish girl who hires an actor to play the perfect boyfriend in the ISA for parents and that means the boyfriend is Jewish and a doctor. I assume things get more complicated. Yes. It's an old screwball comedy, there are lots of plot twists and misunderstandings. The actress isn't Jewish but they have a romance. It's a fun place. I bet he is and the doctor either. Who are the actors and the director and never seen them before? Directed by Kerry Meads and fans will know she is a longtime person, she acts, she directs, she is a playwright. The actress is Cindy Kamel -- Sandy Campbell and you have seen her before. I think it will be a good cast and a good show. Bow just runs to February 12 in Coronado. There is a 20th Anniversary Screening of the Japanese enemy classic "Princess Mononoke" . Remind listeners what "Princess Mononoke" is. That's a Japanese enemy -- Japanese enemy -- Hayao Miyazaki is known . "Princess Mononoke" is about a girl raised by wolves and humans are trying to develop and destroy her home and she battles them this has a lot of intense battle scenes about nature and humanity. The first weekend of 2017 kicks off with events that are sure to please everyone, including a hip hop "Nutcracker" and revisiting an anime classic.

A Culture Shock Nutcracker - A Holiday Hip Hop Theatrical 2017

Culture Shock's modern re-interpretation of the "Nutcracker" is set in the present, blending hit songs and pop culture with Tchaikovsky's original score.

This year's show includes music from Taylor Swift to the "Suicide Squad" soundtrack. And you'll notice that the Land of the Sweets looks a lot like the Land of Oz and features Kinjaz from America’s Best Dance Crew.

The San Diego Symphony presents a month-long series that showcases music inspired by America.

From hip hop and country to composers and jazz musicians, this event will explore questions about what being an American musician means, and whether there's a unifying musical voice in this country.

Festival highlights include La Santa Cecilia, Rosanne Cash, Talib Kweli, Itzhak Perlman and much more.

"Princess Mononoke" 20th Anniversary Screening

In honor of director Hayao Miyazaki's birthday Fathom Events presents a screening of "Princess Mononoke."

The beloved anime classic, which was released 20 years ago, follows the story of a young girl who was raised by wolves and fights to keep humans from destroying her forest home.

The tale captures the conflict between nature and civilization and has been a favorite thanks to iconic characters, intense battle scenes and beautiful animation.

The anniversary screening will also feature a 1995 music video directed by Miyazaki that's never been released in North America.

Lamb's Players Theatre presents the romantic comedy "Beau Jest," written by James Sherman.

The story follows Sarah, a Jewish girl who knows her parents will not approve of her non-Jewish boyfriend. So she hires an actor to play the role of a perfect beau - Jewish and a doctor. Of course, that leads to an entirely different set of problems.

The play is directed by Kerry Meads and will run Jan. 6 through Feb. 12, 2017.
