A play running at the La Jolla Playhouse was inspired by a case that is now being decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

"The Cake" is about the controversy surrounding a baker’s refusal to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.

The play was written by Bekah Brunstetter who is also a writer and producer for the NBC hit show "This Is Us."

"When I heard about what happened in Colorado it just instantly grabbed my attention because it's this huge philosophical conflict centered around something so beautiful and lovely and universal — a cake — that's sort of meant to make everyone happy and bring everyone joy — and I was fascinated," Brunstetter said.

Brunstetter joined Midday Edition on Wednesday to discuss the play.

"The Cake" runs through March 4 at the La Jolla Playhouse.
