Santee is once again taking up the issue of recreational vehicle parking on city streets. The Santee City Council is holding a public workshop Wednesday at 7 p.m. to discuss potential new parking regulations.

This is the second public workshop Santee is holding regarding RV parking. In Santee, RVs, boats and trailers can’t be left on city streets for more than 72 hours without being moved.

Santee follows the California Vehicle Code and San Diego County Code. Santee defines "recreational vehicles" to include travel trailers, pop-up campers, boats and boat trailers.

At the first public workshop held last September, people complained RVs were not following those rules. Instead, the RVs were parking for extended periods of time, which they said blocked streets and caused safety hazards.

Council documents show Santee city staff have been working with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, who enforces parking, to come up with potential new regulations. The department has said the current parking law is hard to enforce because the ordinance does not say exactly how far an RV has to move after 72 hours.

New regulations could include: prohibiting RVs from parking within 50 feet of intersections and crosswalks, requiring RVs to move at least 300 feet every 72 hours, authorizing city staff to issue parking citations, or allowing for construction of new RV storage facilities.

City staffers have also explored the possibility of a permitting system, which they plan to present at Wednesday's workshop.
