Workshops on how to eat better, exercise and reduce stress will be held at libraries and recreation centers in San Diego.

The wellness classes began Tuesday and are part of a partnership between Sharp Healthcare and the city of San Diego.

There are plans for more than 50 workshops focusing on topics, such as depression, substance abuse and living a healthy lifestyle.

"Having folks and professionals that are out there in the community say, 'tell me what some of your questions are and we’ll answer them.' You don’t feel like you have to go down to a clinic or something else. It’s designed to be easy to use and free of charge," San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said.

Sharp Healthcare is also hosting a handful of similar workshops for city employees.

Tracey Grant is a registered dietitian with Sharp Rees-Stealy's Center for Health Management and oversees the workshops.

"Our goal is to get basic, baseline health education into the hands of the community on the topics that they need the most," Grant said. "There’s a lot of basic concepts that are just not common knowledge."

The classes will be held at libraries and recreation centers for the next three years.
