As of Monday, ballots for the 2018 gubernatorial primary election are on their way to voters who chose to vote by mail.

The San Diego County Registrar of Voters said this year they are mailing at least 1.1 million ballots — a record for San Diego. This comes as the region overall is seeing an increase in registered voters.

"We’re currently at 1.67 million registered voters in the county," said Michael Vu, who heads the registrar of voters in San Diego. "That’s the highest the number of registered voters that there have been in the county to date."

Vu said in the past, the registrar usually sees a decrease in registration for gubernatorial elections. About 65 percent of those registered opt to vote by mail in San Diego. But the county still needs to fill more than 6,000 poll worker positions.

"We do a two-hour training onsite and a two-hour online training," Vu said. "And we do provide a stipend, anywhere from $75 to $175."

Of the 1.6 million registered voters in the county — Vu said 37 percent identify as Democrats, followed by 29 percent for Republicans and 29 percent for Independents.
