To the average person, buying an original, contemporary piece of art seems like something reserved for collectors or very wealthy people.

But the San Diego Art Institute wants to change that perception.

This weekend, the Balboa Park arts space brings back its popular C-Note Pop-Up Art Sale, where pieces will go for $100, $200 and $300. The works are by both well-known and undiscovered artists from San Diego and Tijuana.

The items for sale were all selected through a jury, led by San Diego Art Institute's Deputy Director Sarah Trujillo-Porter. More than 200 works will be for sale at the two-day event, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

On KPBS Evening Edition Thursday, Executive Director Jaqueline Silverman explains the idea behind the event, and why owning art should be something available to more than just collectors.
