A U.S. Navy sailor died after falling from an aircraft elevator aboard the USS Nimitz, officials announced Sunday.
The sailor was identified Monday as Juan Jose Garcia-Herrera, 21 of Chicago. He fell from one of the lowered elevators of the aircraft carrier around 9 p.m. Friday while it was in port at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, according to Navy officials.
Garcia-Herrera suffered serious injuries and was transported to UCSD Regional Trauma Center, where he died around 2 a.m. Saturday.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service was looking into the cause of the accident.
Garcia-Herrera, a logistics specialist seaman, enlisted in the Navy in January 2017 and reported to the Nimitz less than six months later, after completing logistics specialist "A" school, the Navy Times reported.
The Nimitz, commissioned in 1975, was in San Diego for routine training operations.
