As California's leaders prepare plans to lift coronavirus restrictions and re-open the economy, lawmakers this week will begin taking a close look at the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

State Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, created a senate subcommittee to review state spending related to the fight against the COVID-19 virus outbreak to ensure oversight and accountability.

The subcommittee will hold its first hearing Thursday. One item lawmakers are expected to examine, Atkins said, is Governor Gavin Newsom's plan to spend $1 billion on masks and personal protective equipment.
