Academic freedom is at the heart of America’s Higher Education system, but a proposal under debate at San Diego State University is raising questions about limits to freedom of speech. The University's Academic Policy and Planning Committee is suggesting a new policy that could strip retired professors of their emeritus status for conduct that harmed SDSU’s reputation.

Retired faculty members at San Diego State University who hold emeritus status benefit from several perks, including office space, continued use of SDSU's libraries and computer systems, ability to continue research and assistance with the cost of health and dental insurance.

A proposal currently making its way through committees of SDSU's Faculty Senate that would allow SDSU's president to revoke the emeritus status of anyone who causes "harm to the university's reputation" is causing controversy among current and past faculty members.

Gary Robbins, science and technology reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune, told Midday Edition that the university response is that the proposed policy eliminates a lapse in policy. Robbins noted that he has been contacted by current and past faculty concerned about academic freedom and free speech.
