Migrant Deaths in Arizona, 1996-2016


At the end of the 1990s, the U.S. built 48 miles of new border fence as part of Operation Gatekeeper and other initiatives. This funneled migrants onto remote routes like the Arizona desert, where they began to die in large numbers mostly due to extreme temperatures.
