Accommodating the Emerging Global Middle Class

In a recent article, Foreign Policy Editor in Chief Moises Naim asks, "Can the world afford a middle class?"

Naim concludes that the answer is yes, but it won't be cheap; the lifestyles of American middle class citizens will have to change drastically to make room for their new global counterparts.

"Changes in migration, urbanization, and income distribution will be widespread," he writes. "And expect growing demands for better housing, healthcare, education, and, inevitably, political participation. The unanticipated effects of the new global middle class will become part of our daily news."
