Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, the officer in charge of the beleaguered Walter Reed Army Medical Center, has been relieved of his command, the Army said today. The news came one day before an independent military review panel was to investigate conditions at the hospital, which has been the subject of severe criticism for its treatment and facilities.
Reports of squalid conditions at one of Walter Reed's outpatient living facilities first appeared in The Washington Post two weeks ago. Since then, the Pentagon has vowed to investigate what went wrong.
