Artwork entries for this exhibition will be accepted between Monday, March 3–Friday, May 9, 2025. Each artist may enter up to one (1) artwork for this exhibition. Date: Artwork must have been completed within the past 2 years. A fun way to experiment with different mediums, this workshop will strengthen important drawing fundamentals that are often skipped (or forgotten). Discover the tactile and expansive art of bookbinding, a medium that lends itself to various art practices. The class will enfold basic methods of bookbinding, where students will learn multiple processes of stitching and folding. Students will walk away from the class with multiple books to fill up however they please, ending the class with one simple fully realized book project. Although students may have bookbinding experience, this course assumes no formal training in the arts. Materials: Bee’s wax, thread, sewing needles, bone folder, punch awl, X-Acto blades, ruler, cutting mat, neutral pH adhesive, various papers. Fun and fast paced, life drawing is a great way to be in the moment. Learn how to draw the human figure, hone your existing skills, and develop some new ones. This class is for all skill levels. Materials: Newsprint pad, 18” x 24”; soft vine charcoal; kneaded eraser. You are welcome to bring along any materials not on the list that you already have and would like to use. The instructor will provide some unusual art supplies with which to experiment. Is life simply better in miniature? In this ceramics class, become a miniature crafter and explore the charm of scaled-down fun. Create miniatures for your doll houses, shadow boxes, and small-scale structures. Students will also learn how to make personalized altars―a perfect place to put mini objects on and hang on the wall for a beautiful display. Beginner-friendly! No pottery experience is necessary. Catherin and Robert Palmer Gallery 20th Annual SDSU Art Council Scholarship Exhibition The Athenaeum Art Center is proud to present an exhibition of artwork by graduate and upper-division undergraduate students of the School of Art and Design at San Diego State University. Since 2002, the SDSU Art Council has awarded scholarships to a select number of students who, in addition to the Council's financial support, receive the opportunity to present their artwork at the Athenaeum. This year’s scholarship recipients and exhibiting artists are Carolina Danu, Sarah Garcia, Kaitlyn Hulslander, Harper Pam, and Bryce Wall. Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. –11 a.m. July 7–11 (5 days, 10 total hours of instruction) AAC Classroom All claws on deck! Let your imagination run wild to create fanciful creatures, ferocious animals, fang-tastic monsters, and furry pets - or invent a creature of your very own! Students will start with a drawing then bring creatures to life. Starting with a ball of clay, students will learn the basics of clay sculpting with just a few tools. To ensure safety, no sharp tools will be involved in creature-making. Beginner-friendly! No pottery experience is necessary. Painting using imagery in art is a fun way to tell a visual story. We use black and white photocopies of ancestors (found or real) as the underlying source to paint. This is a way of creating expressiveness with a subject built in. This way of art making can stand up to any art form found in galleries. In this workshop, learn how to incorporate painted photocopies in your work. Also, learn how to properly adhere paper seamlessly (to a canvas or board) without causing bubbles or creases. Students walk away with several paintings and a good understanding of this fun process. Materials: The $40 fee paid to the instructor at first class includes images, mediums, varnish, and 8" x 10" canvases and use of brushes, palette knife, markers, burnishing tool, gloves, paints. Not provided: aprons, palette paper, paper towels and water cans. Feel free to bring your own brushes, paints, palette paper, or any of the above-listed supplies. You may bring your own black and white images to fit 8" x 10" canvases or email jpegs of your images to Lisa to prepare. Images need to be sent to Lisa (lisabebi@gmail.com) by June 14. If you prefer to work with larger than 8" x 10", you must send your selected jpgs to Lisa two weeks prior to the workshop (by June 3) so she can send them out for processing. Email her immediately to let her know your plan and the size of your image(s). There may be an added cost. For those working in a larger format, they must bring their own proper-sized canvas. In this intimate class of eight, students will engage in two 6-hour poses: female for the first two days and male for the following two. Regardless of drawing ability, participants will advance beyond quick sketches, learning a time-tested method for creating more finished figures and portraits. While six hours may seem short compared to traditional ateliers, it provides ample opportunities for Ken and Stephanie to introduce essential vocabulary and concepts that will significantly enhance your drawing skills beyond the typical 20-minute sessions of most sketch groups. During the first two days, you will learn from Ken, and on Days 3 and 4, from Stephanie. In this workshop, you'll learn to create an accurately angled, well-proportioned figure, transform it into volumetric forms like cylinders, cubes, and spheres, and then add the final touches that change an unfinished drawing into a polished art piece. Beginners will be encouraged to start their drawings on newsprint (using vine charcoal, charcoal pencils, and a kneaded eraser), and to then transfer their rough “starts” onto good quality white or toned paper to attain a more finished version in charcoal or graphite. Intermediate and advanced students are free to start in whatever way they prefer on any quality white or toned paper they are accustomed to, using any medium of their choice, such as pencil, charcoal, pan pastel, watercolor, acrylics, or oils. All levels are welcome, as instruction is individualized. Materials: You don’t need to purchase everything on this list. Only buy materials that are relevant to the medium with which you plan to work. If you’re more experienced, you may choose the medium of your preference. Beginners should start Day 1 with newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, and a kneaded eraser. Drawing pad: 18" x 24” smooth newsprint and a wood or foam core drawing board (one inch larger with four clips). Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal and Conte 3B charcoal pencil or your favorite brand. Graphite: 2B, 4B, and 6B graphite pencils. Sharpener: Single edged razor blade or utility knife and rough sandpaper such as 90 grit. Erasers: Kneaded eraser and Tombow eraser. Blending stumps―large and small. Rags or Viva paper towels. Optional: Strathmore 400 series grey toned paper (24" x 18"); Pan Pastel in black and white; two triangle-shaped sponge applicators with extra sponges; one white, soft pastel.
