  • The United States Tennis Association Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will be played Saturday, August 5 through Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Barnes Tennis Center, 4490 W. Point Loma Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92107. Over 400 of the top junior tennis players in the country, aged 16 and 18 and under, will compete for the title of National Champion. In addition, the following wild cards to the 2023 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., will be awarded to the tournament’s top finishers. 18s Champion – US Open Main Draw and US Open Junior Main Draw 18s Finalist – US Open Junior Main Draw 18s 3rd Place – US Open Junior Main Draw 16s Champion – US Open Junior Main Draw 18s 4th & 5th Place – US Open Junior Qualifying “We are anticipating a very strong player field in both divisions for this year’s national championships. It’s going to be a spectacular event with so many talented players coming from across the country to play this tournament,” said Tournament Director Lornie Kuhle. “Fans coming to this event will get to watch the future of American women’s tennis as many of these players will play collegiate tennis and some will go on to compete on the WTA Tour.” Sofia Kenin, the 2015 Girls’ 18s champion, captured the Australian Open singles title in 2020 and achieved a career-high No. 4 in the WTA singles rankings. Coco Gauff, who reached the 18s semifinals in 2018, advanced to her first-career Grand Slam singles final at the 2022 French Open. Last August, Gauff became the No. 1 ranked doubles player in the world and this past October, she achieved a career-high No. 4 in the WTA singles rankings. The Girls’ 16s event will begin on Saturday, August 5 and conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Saturday, August 12. The Girls’ 18s tournament will get underway on Sunday, August 6 and conclude with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday, August 13. Both divisions feature 256-player singles draws with the top 32 players receiving a first-round bye. There will also be 128-team doubles draws with the top 16 teams getting first-round byes. The Opening Ceremony for the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will take place at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday, August 5 at 4:30 p.m. (PDT). Admission is free each day of the tournament and there is no charge for parking at the Barnes Tennis Center. The daily starting times are subject to change.   • Due to overwhelming demand after the success of his back-to-back career-spanning Hollywood Bowl concerts, visionary composer and recording artist Danny Elfman has confirmed two upcoming shows - Danny Elfman: "From Boingo to Batman to Big Mess and Beyond!" - at North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre on Thursday, August 3. These live shows will feature Elfman backed by an all-star rock band, and the same orchestra, and choir that he played with during his set at Coachella 2022 and Halloween weekend shows at the Hollywood Bowl, as they perform songs from Oingo Boingo; his solo career, including his 2021 album "Big Mess"; as well as a plethora of his film scores and television themes from "Alice in Wonderland", "Batman", "Edward Scissorhands", "The Nightmare Before Christmas", "The Simpsons", and more. The audience will be transported into Elfman’s vision and magical world; with his haunting compositions brought to life on stage and enhanced by visuals on the big screen. This limited run of Southern California concerts will provide full-length versions of his past highly acclaimed performances. Band members include Stu Brooks on bass (Dub Trio, Lady Gaga), Nili Brosh on guitar (Dethklok), Robin Finck on guitar (Nine Inch Nails, Guns N’ Roses), and Ilan Rubin on drums (Nine Inch Nails, Angels & Airwaves). About Danny Elfman: Danny Elfman, film composer and singer-songwriter for the rock band Oingo Boingo, has garnered international recognition for composing over 100 feature film scores, as well as compositions for television, stage productions, and the concert hall. Elfman has been Tim Burton's composer for more than 35 years, having scored 17 Burton films such as "Batman", "Pee-wee’s Big Adventure", "Beetlejuice", "Edward Scissorhands", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Alice in Wonderland", "Dumbo", and "Big Fish". Elfman has also frequently worked with director Sam Raimi on films such as "Spider-Man" and the blockbuster "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", as well as "Gus Van Sant" for his Academy Award-winning films "Good Will Hunting and Milk". Additionally, he wrote music for all the "Men in Black" and "Fifty Shades of Grey" franchise films, the songs and score for Henry Selick and Tim Burton’s animated musical "The Nightmare Before Christmas", and the themes for the popular television series "Desperate Housewives" and "The Simpsons" as well as the new Netflix hit series "Wednesday" starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams..
