Carmen Winant is an artist and the Roy Lichtenstein Chair of Studio Art at the Ohio State University. Her work utilizes archival and authored photographs to examine feminist care networks, with particular emphasis on intergenerational, multiracial, and sometimes transnational coalition building. Winant's recent projects have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Sculpture Center, Wexner Center of the Arts, ICA Boston, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and el Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo. Winant's artist’s books include My Birth (2018), Notes on Fundamental Joy (2019), and Instructional Photography: Learning How To Live Now (2021); Arrangements, A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures (both 2022), and The last safe abortion (2024). Winant is a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow in photography, a 2020 FCA Artist Honoree and a 2021 American Academy of Arts and Letters award recipient. She is also a community organizer, prison educator, and mother to her two children, Carlo and Rafa, shared with her partner, Luke Stettner. On June 17, the third Monday of the month, join us at the Villa Montezuma at 7 p.m. for Songs of the East! One evening each month, Cinballera hosts its own monthly opera night, Cinballera Salon: Opera at the Villa! We're collaborating with the historic Villa Montezuma Museum at 1925 K Street, San Diego in the historic Sherman Heights Historic District. June will be Salon's fourth month. This month will be an exotic adventure to the Orient, a musical journey through India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Persia, Turkey, China, and Japan. The Middle East and Far East come to life through opera arias and art songs set in oriental countries, with repertoire ranging from beloved Puccini classics to obscure British art songs. We call this series Cinballera Salon because it is a loving tribute to the musical salons of years past, when friends would gather in lovely parlor to enjoy sharing music for an evening. Hosted the third week of the month, each evening will have a different theme. Music on the program will include opera arias, art songs, and other classical vocal music, performed by talented operatic singers from throughout the region. There is a special emphasis on duets, trios, and other ensembles, to recreate opera scenes in an intimate setting. In keeping with this mansion's gracious history, we encourage our guests to use this as an excuse to dress up for an evening out! Gentlemen, dust off your favorite suit and tie, and ladies, here's a chance to wear that dress and hat you've been saving! In keeping with the theme, the suggested style guide is inspiration from the Orient. You could wear traditional Middle Eastern or Asian garb or Western clothing with hints of eastern style. There are no tickets, just admittance with a donation at the door. The suggested amount is $25 per person, but we appreciate whatever you can contribute. Cinballera Entertainment is 501(3)c, so all donations are tax deductible. All the proceeds benefit the two non-profit organizations, Cinballera and Friends of the Villa Montezuma, Inc, and pay the performers involved. An art exhibit created by art majors who have produced artwork in studio courses in the MiraCosta College Art Department and are enrolled in ART 295, Visual Art/Professional Practice. All work in the exhibition will be premiered in the exhibition. Students collaborate to design all aspects of the exhibition and premiere their artwork as a culmination and capstone project of their semester studies. Visions Museum of Textile Art is proud to unveil “Latine Entretejida/Interwoven,” a program designed to foster connection and showcase Latine textile artists who are inspired by the unique culture that engulfs the San Diego/Tijuana border. Renowned artists Irma Poeter, Marisa Raygoza, Mely Barragan, and Olivia Arreguin present a diverse collection of quilts, sculptures, and fashion pieces, showcasing the beauty and complexity of their cultural textile art. Complementing the exhibition, Latine features engaging programming for all ages, including artist-led workshops and a community art project. The City of Encinitas, in partnership with the North Coast Symphony Orchestra, presents the inaugural 2024 Youth Piano Concerto Competition Concert on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 2:30 p.m. at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas. The award-winning performers include Frank Luo, Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 in A, Movement 3; Luna Lee, Beethoven Concerto No 1, Movement 3; and Maxwell Tran, Shostakovich Concerto No. 2, Movement 1. The winners competed for the first-place prize of a $250 contract to perform one movement of a selected concerto with the orchestra on a Steinway D concert grand piano. The orchestra will also perform Beethoven’s Prometheus Overture. Admission: $25 first row, $15 general. Oolong Gallery Presents "Sembrando un Jardín" A Solo Exhibition by Peruvian Painter Sylvia Fernández Oolong Gallery is thrilled to announce the upcoming solo exhibition "Sembrando un Jardín" by Peruvian painter Sylvia Fernández. This exhibition marks the final showcase in the gallery's current raw form before the warehouse undergoes significant construction and division. The show will be held from May 18 to June 9, 2024 with an opening reception Saturday May 18 from 2-5 p.m. at Oolong Gallery, including an event to follow in celebration of the parallel exhibition in the foyer gallery by graphite artist Christina Hendershaw. Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Sunday, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. + by appt Sylvia Fernández, who relocated to Oceanside, California in 2022, brings a deeply personal and visceral body of work to the former glass building. Her latest series, "Sembrando un Jardín" (Sowing a Garden), reflects a studio practice of rediscovering nature and establishing a sense of belonging in a new environment. Her oil paintings present lush scenes, femme lurking and a wild jungle of green splendor. The work has taken San Diego by storm in a matter of two years. This large scale solo includes an appropriate bigger installation of paintings for the first time in the US, and a fitting final treatment to this raw industrial space. It comes in a timely manner as her first inclusion in the LA art world recently commenced at the allied gallery La Loma Projects, Highland Park in a group show. "Moving and relocating comes with a load of unexpected emotions. Leaving your habitat and relying on memories every day to not feel lost is a tough and pleasant constant mental exercise," says Fernández. "In a deep, calm, alert way, I’ve seen time pass by and let myself grow here. 'Sembrando un Jardín' is the awareness of the beginning of a new path, the poetic exercise where intimate emotions transfer to universal ideas of belonging." The exhibition explores the symbiotic relationships between humans and nature, illustrating how new connections can foster growth and hope. Fernández's work brilliantly captures the delicate interplay of light, color, and form, inviting viewers to contemplate their own relationships with the natural world. About Sylvia Fernández Born in Lima, Perú in 1978, Sylvia Fernández graduated with a gold medal from Escuela Superior de Arte Corriente Alterna in 2002. Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally, including recent shows such as "Dream Syndication" at La Loma Projects in Los Angeles, CA (2024), "Shape Shifting" at Two Rooms in San Diego, CA (2023), and "New Islands" at Tyger Tyger Gallery in Asheville, NC (2023). Since moving to San Diego in 2022, Fernández continues to explore the abstract boundaries of the mind and body in relation to nature.
