Retailers Gauge Holiday Shopping Trends

Tom Fudge: Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. It got its name because that is the day when retailers, supposedly, see their annual sales go into the black. In other words, they start making a profit. We do know for sure that Black Friday is the first day of the Christmas shopping season. And economists consider it a bellwether for the health of holiday retail sales.
