Former Meth Addicts Discuss the Drug That Nearly Ruined Their Lives

Tom Fudge : A writer once said that the urge to feel like you're outside of your body is common desire in human beings. Some people turn to drugs to achieve this. Every modern American generation seems to have a drug that is accessible, powerful, habit forming and inevitably destructive. Once it was heroin, then crack cocaine; now, most people in law enforcement will tell you that it's methamphetamine.

Crystal meth, as it's commonly called, is a highly addictive homemade stimulant. Law enforcement officials say that meth addiction is a factor in many violent and property crimes. Tonight a group of local television stations, including KPBS, are taking part in a cooperative broadcast. It features the airing of a documentary called Crystal Darkness . Coverage begins tonight on KPBS at 7 p.m.

  KPBS is part of a county-wide effort to examine the problems around methamphetamine in San Diego. You can watch our television special beginning at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 on channel 15 / cable 11.
