Bald Women Do Lunch and Learn to Cope

A non-profit group designed to help women who suffer from hair loss will be holding a special event in Rancho Bernardo next month. The organization is called Bald Women Do Lunch. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

Nearly five million Americans are affected by the condition known as alopecia areata. It’s a skin disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body.

Bald Girls Do Lunch founder Thea Chassin lost her hair more than ten years ago. She says society doesn’t have a problem with bald men.

Chassin: But for bald women, there’s a lot more of a taboo. And of course for us, we have a lot more sensitivity to being bald, and our hair, just being so much a part of our whole identity.

Chassin says the Bald Girl lunches give women the chance to discuss ways to cope with the emotional challenges of hair loss.
