Thousands Expected for Father Joe's New Year's Day Luncheon

It may not be an Italian sidewalk café, but Father Joe's Villages will host the annual New Year's Day lunch for the homeless outside in the sun this year.

It may not be an Italian sidewalk café, but Father Joe's Villages will host the annual New Year's Day lunch for the homeless outside in the sun this year.

Father Joe says he's going to take advantage of the warm winter weather to set up dozens of tables on the side walk at the foot of Imperial Avenue in downtown San Diego.

He expects up to a thousand low income families and homeless guests will show up to celebrate the start of 2008 with a special menu.

Father Joe: It's warm, it's sunny, it's San Diego. We all want to eat outdoors, why not the homeless? And so we're going to serve a big roast pork dinner outside sitting in the sun, because the rain's coming this weekend and it will all be frozen.

Those still sleeping on the streets this winter have been dealing with especially cold temperatures. The first seating of the New Year's Homeless luncheon will begin at 11 a.m.
