Group Says Privacy Violated for Gay Teacher

A teachers union says San Diego school district officials violated the personal privacy of a gay teacher. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis says the union president is urging the community speak out at today's school board meeting.

37-year-old Gerald Gapusan teaches at Challenger Middle School in Mira Mesa. Last month, Gapusan gave up his role as lead chaperone of a popular student field trip after a parent complained about his MySpace web page. MySpace is a socializing network on the Internet. District officials looked into the matter and determined Gapusan did post content that was in poor taste. They provided what they call as "evidence" to the media without notifying Gapusan or his attorneys. Teachers union president Camille Zombro says the action violated the teacher's rights.

Zombro:

If we allow this to go on unnoticed or we're silent about it, then we complicit. And we're not willing to be complicit to creating what amounts to a hostile work environment.
Many parents standby Gapusan and believe he's being targeted because he's gay. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
