Chula Vista Charter School Closes Two Campuses

A San Diego County charter school organization abruptly shut down two of its Chula Vista campuses last week. That sent many students scrambling to find alternatives over the weekend. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Eagle Peak Charter School had 70 students at its Chula Vista campus. But late last week school officials announced they were cutting the elementary and high school programs. Officials say they're grappling with a $2.5 million budget deficit. Principal Rachel Fullilove says the move is unfair to high school seniors who plan to graduate in June.

Fullilove: They're trying to focus and have a strong finish to the end of the year. And now their attention is divided between finding schools and making sure their units transfer and that their graduating requirements match up.

Fullilove says some students will attend Chula Vista High School. Eagle Peak is also encouraging kids to sign up for its home school or independent study programs. But Fullilove says most of her students live with parents who work and don't speak fluent English. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
