Tom Fudge: Up until now, universal health-care coverage has been a pipedream in California. Generally, it’s something that liberal politicians propose each year, and then see shot down. But yesterday, a Republican governor proposed something that could be called universal coverage. In fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger wants health-care coverage to be not just the rule in California, but the law…with no exceptions.
This doesn’t mean all doctors' visits would be paid for by the state. We’re looking at some pretty large deductibles here. But the Governor’s plan is expansive, expensive, and of course it is controversial.
John Myers is the Sacramento bureau chief for KQED public radio and the California report. He covered the story of the governor’s health care proposal yesterday. This evening he’ll cover Schwarzenegger’s State of the State address. You could say that John is being kept pretty busy. Now, he joins me from his studio at the State Capital.
