A dispute has arisen over the SDUSD 's decision to allow Muslim students to take time from an Arabic language class to pray. The class at Carver Elementary in Oak Park falls during one of the specific prayer times prescribed by their religion.

District lawyers say the district cannot restrict students' right to their own private religious expression. The district was sued and lost in 1993 when it denied a University City High student's request to hold lunchtime bible fellowship.
