The California Coastal Commission approved a request to let the Lodge at Torrey Pines use part of the state beach as an added amenity for hotel guests and the public. The Lodge will put storage trailers on three parking spaces within the state beach parking lot. It will also temporarily set-up beach chairs, umbrellas and cabanas on a 6,000-square-foot-section of sand at the southern end of Torrey Pines State Beach.

The Sierra Club's Mark Massara says using more of the park's limited parking hurt's public access.

Massara : Visitation of this area at Torrey Pines is limited by available public parking. When that Torrey Pines State Beach public parking lot fills up, that's what limits the access to that beach.

The approval lets the Lodge use the beach this summer and next summer. The hotel also plans to offer a limited food and beverage service on the beach. Non-hotel guests can also rent the beach gear.
