Chula Vista Kidnap Victim Himself a Target of Federal Probe

U.S. law enforcement sources say a Mexican businessman who was kidnapped for ransom in Chula Vista in June is himself the target of a federal investigation. Federal authorities believe Eduardo Gonzalez Tostado's alleged captors are part of a kidnap and murder crew that targets members of Tijuana's Arellano Felix Drug Cartel. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has details.

U.S. law enforcement sources say they were already investigating Gonzalez before he was kidnapped.

The sources would not say why they're focused on him.

Gonzalez is a witness in the state's case against his alleged captors.

During preliminary hearings, Gonzalez has denied any that he's tied to the Arellano Felix Drug Cartel.

Mario Conte is a law professor at Cal Western. He says the state views Gonzalez as a victim. But Conte says federal authorities may see Gonzalez differently.

Conte : And that can cause a very interesting situation in that the federal government and the state are going to have to decide how to pursue this person, who goes first, what happens to him.

Gonzalez was allegedly held for nine days while his captors tried to collect $2 million ransom from his family.
