Another Hearing on the Toll Road

The  Commerce Department says it will hold a public hearing in California this summer on a controversial proposal to build a toll road through San Onofre State Park.  KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

The California Coastal Commission rejected the toll road plan last February at a hearing that brought out more than 3,000 supporters and opponents.

But the group that wants to build the six-lane road, Transportation Corridor Agencies , appealed the ruling to the Commerce Secretary.

At least eight environmental groups requested the Commerce Secretary hold a public hearing in California before making a final decision on the appeal.

The Commerce Department says the hearing will be held sometime between mid-July and mid-September.

The location and specific date has not been determined.

Opponents say the road will hurt wildlife, archaeological sites, water quality and beach access.

Those supporting the toll road say it will reduce congestion on parts of I-5.
