Local Workshop Focuses on Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Climate change researchers say the planet is warming because of human-caused activity. Scientists say we can slow the rate of global warming if we reduce what they call our carbon footprint. That’s the focus of a workshop in San Diego this morning. KPBS reporter Ed Joyce has more.

Measuring the carbon footprint of individuals and businesses is the first step toward reducing the activities that create greenhouse gases.

Bob Gilleskie is the director of engineering for the Center for Sustainable Energy . He says the center’s free workshop is designed to spread the message that ‘going green’ is good for all energy users and the planet. Gilleskie says it doesn't cost businesses profits to save energy and cut those emissions.

Gilleskie : We can save money when we look at energy efficiency, by looking at increased productivity in buildings, by making buildings green.

He says experts will talk about specific methods and technologies to drive down greenhouse gas emissions. The workshop also provides tools to conduct good carbon management practices.

The free workshop on minimizing your carbon footprint starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Center for Sustainable Energy in San Diego.
