More than 60 percent of registered San Diego County voters cast a ballot in the February primary election. A record nine million Californians voted on Super Tuesday.
"That's the highest turnout that we have had for a presidential primary in over 30 years," says Deborah Seiler, San Diego County's registrar of voters.
Seiler says the number of people who voted by mail exceeded the number of people who went to the polls by almost 10 percentage points.
"I do believe that it was high because there was intense interest in this presidential primary election. As you know, both sides had fairly intense contests at that point, and there was an excitement, I think."
Democratic ballots outnumbered Republican ballots by more than 73,000. That could be because the Democratic Party allowed independents to vote in February, but the Republicans did not.
