San Diego, Tijuana Officials to Discuss Bi-national Sewage Problem

A city councilman from San Diego and one from Tijuana are meeting to try to solve the bi-national sewage problem. Councilman Ben Hueso will meet with his Tijuana counterpart tomorrow. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

Every time it rains, thousands of gallons of polluted water flow from Tijuana across the border and out to sea off San Diego's coast.

The fetid run off makes people sick, chokes off an important estuary and closes beaches for months every year.

Efforts by both country’s federal governments to solve the sewage problem have repeatedly been mired in problems.

Environmentalist Oscar Romo is spearheading two pilot programs in a Tijuana neighborhood to help control the pollution. He says the projects are relatively fast and cheap solutions. But he says many federal groups.

Romo: Don't really pay attention to these small solutions. With the help of these two individuals, council members, I want to make this process easy.

Romo's pilot project includes paving tiles that soak up runoff and a local wastewater treatment plant.

The model can be expanded to other neighborhoods.
