Tom Fudge: If you want to talk to someone who has followed the U.S. space program from start to finish, you couldn't do much better than Jay Barbree. The NBC reporter says he's covered every U.S. astronaut mission. He was a cub reporter when the Soviet Sputnik traveled the sky and forced America into the space race.

When I say he's covered the U.S. space program from start to finish, maybe I shouldn't say it's finished. But outer space does not capture the imagination the way it once did. So why are we still firing rockets into orbit? What's it all for today?
