Cal Agency Holds Local Hearing On Wildfires

The California Public Utilities Commission is holding a public meeting on the October 2007 wildfires in San Diego County. The agency wants to find out what residents know about San Diego Gas and Electric's tree trimming and other actions related to powerlines.  KPBS Environmental Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The agency says it wants the public's perspective on tree trimming, line clearances, and other aspects of utility operations.

Commissioners from the CPUC, an Administrative Law Judge, and elected officials are expected to attend and may make brief statements.

San Diego Gas and Electric is facing many lawsuits related to the Witch Creek, Guejito and Rice Canyon fires, which its lines are blamed for igniting.

Investigators have concluded that sparks of molten metal from arcing power lines started three of the seven wildfires that killed two people and destroyed more than 1,300 homes last year.

The CPUC says the hearing will assist it in developing ways to reduce the risk of fires in the state.

The meeting is Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Al Bahr Shrine Center on Kearny Mesa Road in San Diego.
