UCSD Helps Keep State Economy Afloat

A new report released today finds UC San Diego is doing its part to keep California's economy afloat. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

The study finds UCSD is pumping more than seven billion dollars into the state every year. About five billion goes into San Diego County's economy.

The revenue is linked to start-up companies created by UCSD alumni -- or supported by university researchers -- in biotech and wireless communications. UCSD is also a powerhouse in health care and medical research.

UCSD's Gary Matthews says more than 33,000 county jobs revolve around those ventures.

Matthews: We will certainly be impacted by the economics of the times. But at the same time, what's clear is, the services that we provide, as well as economics, the dollars and cents, are here for the long term.

UCSD is the third-largest employer in San Diego County. The State of California and the federal government employ the most.
