Maureen Cavanaugh: Just because you're developing the medical miracles of the future, doesn't mean you won't be hurt by the economic downturns of today. That's a lesson many businesses in San Diego's biotech industry are learning. The need for medical breakthroughs hasn't decreased, but the amount of money people are willing to invest in those advances has fallen off considerably.
